Spec Racing Series

There are racing series out there where all the cars are as identical as possible, using the same basic chassis, engine, and suspension. This evens up the playing field a bit more. Spec racing is becoming amazingly popular with huge Miata and Spec Ford fields at many events. Many levels in Nascar could be considered spec series, and the IRL also fits the definition of a spec series.

Karting
Go kart racing can be a very easy way to get involved in motorsports, have some fun, and get some seat time. It can also be just as expensive as running a full size car. Certain areas of America support kart racing much more than others. Some states, you'd be hard pressed to even find a kart track anywhere. A big benefit of karts over cars is the amount of space they require. Running a low budget kart series can be done out of a small shed or even a rental storage unit if you live in a city.  Some open wheel drivers use shifter karts to stay sharp. A shifter kart may just be the biggest bang for the buck in motorsports. A relatively new area of karting that is gaining popularity is indoor kart racing. More facilities are being built and it is the best way to get your feet wet and see if karting is your thing. Most places have a weekly racing series. The only downside is that they aren't set up for younger kids to race, which kind of misses the point a little bit.
